9 Best Super Bowl Car Insurance Commercials of All Time

Many of us get almost as excited to watch the commercials during the Super Bowl as we do the game. From Budweiser to Doritos, Audi to Coke, advertisers certainly draw the laughs and attention they pay for. Each year, viewers tune in with high expectations of both the game and the ads, and each year companies set out to impress. The following is a list of Super Bowl ads by auto insurance carriers that have not only pleased us during the game, but have kept us laughing and grinning in the years since.

  1. Nationwide, 2005: This commercial speaks toward the reality of insurance using a comic representation of the featured stars career. In this ad, rapper MC Hammer dances with a line of ladies in front of a large mansion to his hit song “Can’t Touch This.” As the screen cuts to black and returns with MC Hammer sitting alone in front of a foreclosed sign, we laugh hysterically at the reference but also realize that life is full of unexpected happenings for which Nationwide comes in handy.
  2. State Farm, 2006: State Farm goes helmet to helmet with Allstate, Geico, and Progressive in this football spoof that uses comparative amusement to get the point across. As we learn through clever comedy that State Farm literally crushes the competition, we are reminded that when it comes to auto insurance, much like football, it’s best to be the member of a winning team.
  3. Progressive, 1999: In this brilliant campaign, ET departs earth while being asked about humans. Amidst the conversation, ET explains that adults sometimes have car accidents and are helped by the people at Progressive. Ironically a near-miss with a space shuttle leaves the others asking ET how they can contact Progressive for coverage. This funny ad goes to show that no matter where you are or what planet your from, auto insurance is a must-have and their commercials are a must-laugh.
  4. Nationwide, 2006: A spoof on the days of Fabio fame, this commercial is just one of the greats. In this ad, a young Fabio woos a woman on a boat; that is until suddenly the woman looks up to see a quite-aged Fabio offering her a rose. As the woman quickly becomes released from his enthralls and shrugs away, we realize that just as age sneaks up on us, so do instances where we need insurance coverage.
  5. Geico, 2006: The “caveman at the airport” is an ad in which a modern and intelligent looking caveman is gliding down a moving walkway when he notices a billboard as he passes out of view. Walking back in the wrong direction he sees a Geico ad and is disgusted that it implies that cavemen are of subprime intelligence. Geico spent years torturing this modern caveman and we spent years laughing at his frustration.
  6. Nationwide, 2006: There is nothing more touching than a father and child playing and swinging amidst a majestic view; that is until dad gets hit by the swing carrying a boy who has instantaneously aged 10 years. The impact catches the viewer off guard and the catch phrase “life comes at you fast” sums up the metaphoric reality which strikes laughter in all.
  7. Safe Auto, 2011: Humans naturally laugh at the misfortune of others and Safe Auto takes advantage of this with this brilliant ad. “Kicked” depicts a man who repeatedly gets kicked in the groin all while comparing the pain the man feels to the fines and penalties of being caught without proper auto insurance coverage. As comedic metaphors go, this is definitely one to remember.
  8. Nationwide, 2007: Opening with a music video featuring Kevin Federline, this commercial erupts with hilarity when the scene switches to show Federline as a McDonalds employee wasting time watching his past fame on the screen above. This ad comically acknowledges the importance of insurance in dealing with the mishaps that life throws our way.
  9. Allstate, 2011: Another great insurance ad, this commercial also touched millions. As Mayhem man speaks as if he’s snow atop a garage roof and compares himself to winter weight gain, he draws a sympathetic chuckle and reminds the world of the importance of auto and home insurance protection. Mayhem man truly mixes hilarity with the grim realities of real life.
